Riot Games, the mastermind behind League of Legends, is set to revolutionise the Esports scene with a brand new third international tournament. This groundbreaking event, slated for the 2025 season, will introduce a revamped split system and the merging of leagues, among other exciting additions.
According to Riot Games, this new tournament will take place in March next year and will feature five teams. Although the tournament has yet to be officially named, it’s certain that it will be a banger for many. To accommodate for this new championship, all the matches will follow a three-split system.
According to Riot Games, keeping the League of Legends sustainable will be a part of their new strategy. As VALORANT has already done before, Riot Games has proposed a new plan of merging LLA, LCS, and CBLOL and creating a United Americas league. In addition to that, PCS, VCS, LCO, and LJL will be merging to create an APAC league.
The New Major LAN Event
This new LAN event will feature five teams from three main regions, i.e., LEC, LPL, and LCK, along with the newly-formed APAC and Americas leagues. Although every tournament will follow the three-split system, these wil be played on a smaller scale, feature only winners of the five main leagues, and will be an international LAN tournament.
LEC has called the new event the “Winter Split,” as it will take place after the first split. Once the new event finishes, the second split will continue to qualify players for the next event, as it did before. After the MSI has ended, the winning teams will turn to the world championships.
Similar to the ones featured in 2023, every region will include regional championships for the players. Now, each region will possess one slot at this new unnamed event of the new season, two slots at the regionals, and three slots at the world championships. Not only that, but MSI champions and the second-best performing team will also get a slot at the world championships.
