BeReal Hit With Layoffs Following Voodoo Acquisition

In June, Voodoo, which is a hypercasual and hybridcasual game publisher, acquired BeReal, which is a photo-sharing app maker company. Just two weeks after the acquisition, around 28 staff lost their jobs and positions, and the company hit them with layoffs. Staff from iOS and Android engineering, backend engineering, QA, and Marketing departments were removed from their positions. This is done because the company wants to refocus on France/ Europe-based talents, and for that, scrutiny of the employees was needed.

Although these people served the company for years and helped the social platform grow from 200,000 to 25 million daily active users, they were laid off because the focus had shifted. BeReal COO Romain Salzman said that these staff members are deeply impacted by this sudden layoff because they worked under tremendous pressure and built the working platform for the users while growing it in 18 months. This year, the total number of employees at BeReal was 60, which has now decreased to 32.

The spokesperson of Voodoo said that they want to focus on BeReal’s growth in a sustainable way and, thus, have made the decision to let these staff members go. They also added that although it was tough for them to make such an announcement, they had to do so for the betterment of the company. The company has decided to support the teams and individuals who were laid off as their contribution has been valuable all this while. As Voodoo has acquired BeReal, it aims to create a place where users can connect with the people who are close to it and maintain the real mission and values of BeReal.
