The Consumer Affairs Ministry Urges Action Against Illegal Betting And Gambling Ads Violating CCPA Norms

Online betting has been banned in India by the Government for a long time; however, it has raised their concerns in recent years. As you know, Indian Premier League (IPL) matches are still going on, and it is one of the popular cricket formats where people put their money on betting apps.

Despite being outlawed under the Public Gambling Act of 1867, some online platforms are still functioning and promoting their services among the citizens. A large number of youth and adults are attracted to this illegal betting, which has raised concerns about financial and socio-economic repercussions.

Although betting is an exciting activity, it also possesses risks such as addiction, health issues, isolation, financial loss, privacy breaches, cyberbullying and other violent actions. So, to prevent these risks, the Consumer Affairs Ministry has asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) to identify the violators and take legal action against them.

They have urged them to stay vigilant against the illegal betting and gambling ads flouting CCPA norms to protect consumers. Since Meity is responsible for overseeing the online gaming system, the Consumer Affairs Ministry has requested cooperation on this scrutiny.

The gaming apps that promote or regulate these illegal betting activities may be imposed with heavy penalties, and the government may also ban their operations in future.

Apart from identifying and taking legal action against the violators, the ministry is also supporting Bengaluru’s National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences. This institute is established to study the behaviour of people who are associated with online gaming and identify the severity. This study and research aim to identify how these impulsive behaviours can be controlled and mitigate the risks associated with online betting and gambling. So, according to Miety, none of the self-regulatory online gaming platforms will be able to function. The rules have been set up for fair gaming that only the registered and authorised entities will be able to render their e-gaming services in India.
