Activision Blizzard, a titan in the gaming industry, has been dealt a significant blow. The company has lost a patent infringement case against Acceleration Bay, resulting in a substantial financial burden. Activision Blizzard is now required to pay a staggering $23.4 Million in damages. This case, which revolved around their flagship games, such as Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, has undoubtedly left a mark on the company.
According to a report by Reuters, the legal battle between Activision Blizzard and Acceleration Bay, which began in 2016, has finally reached a verdict. The case, revolving around games like World of Warcraft, Call of Duty: Blackops III, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, revealed that these games were using Acceleration Bay’s technologies in multiplayer networking technology.
The patents were mainly related to simultaneously sharing information amongst widely distributed computers.

As per the Jury’s decision, Acceleration Bay has proved all the evidence favouring their side. The jury has imposed on Activision to pay $18 Million in damages for the infringement in World of Warcraft and $5.4 Million in damages for infringement in Call of Duty titles.
The President of Acceleration Bay said in their statement that they were delighted with the Jury’s decision. On the other hand, Activision’s spokesperson stated that they were disappointed and had a strong basis for the appeal. Activision’s spokesperson iterated that they haven’t used any patented technology in their games, as stated in the case.
