People in India like online gaming a lot, but many people are becoming addicted to it, and the situations are going to the point of committing suicide. The suicide of Ramu, a 38-year-old man from Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu, is a recent case of online gaming. It has sparked outrage among people, including Anbumani Ramadoss, a leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). He demanded the Tamil Nadu government investigate the case and act against online gaming.
According to a report in Tamil Samayam, Ramu worked as a food supplier but had taken a debt of Rs 10 lakhs from various sources. He gets involved in online gaming to earn easy money in short periods, which causes him the addiction. He was unable to pay his debts and committed suicide by drowning in a well in Arakkonam.
As reported in Tamil.Oneindia, Ramu’s death inspired the PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss to demand strict measures for online gaming platforms. According to Ramadoss, it is important to act against online gaming to prevent such cases in the future, as Ramu’s suicide is the sixth incident related to online gaming.
In 2021, a woman committed suicide due to a loss in online gaming, which led the Tamil Nadu government to ban online games, including online rummy and poker. However, these gaming laws of the Tamil Nadu government were declared unconstitutional by the Chennai High Court in 2022.
The Tamil Nadu government challenged this judgement in the Supreme Court but the final hearing is yet to come. However, people are hoping that the courts and government will take effective measures against online gaming platforms after the suicide of Ramu.
