Jonathan Blow With Colin Moriarty: Fixing The Problems Of Game Industry

Colin Moriarty intrigued Jonathan Blow, a popular game designer and programmer in the gaming industry. Jonathan has designed some of the popular games for PlayStation and shared some experience in the gaming industry during an interview in Sacred Symbols, a PlayStation PodCast. They also touched on some tweets Blow sent back in January and discussed the problems plaguing the industry.

Jonathan stated in an PodCast that the games designed 8 years back had poor quality with lack of control over the game. So, he has introduced new 3D engines that have enhanced the quality of the game. His team have also used interactive colour to showcase the blast and other elements to improve the gaming experience.

He has worked for years to simplify the programming to avoid compromises in the quality of the game, especially for user experience. From a business point of view, Jonathan stated that when he is concerned with designing the game, he is more focused on making conventional games. He is more concerned with adding interactive storytelling and designing the game in a unique way rather than focusing on money.

Though his gaming company is small in terms of big companies like Fortnite, his team believes in them with their unique game design. He is proud that his team has some really passionate game designers and programmers who are more conscious of solving problems and improving the gaming experience. He stated that the programmers hired on a merit basis are causing damage to the gaming industry that their company doesn’t do.

Jonathan states that regarding sacrifices and being fired from the company, people who are not skilled get no ideas at some expense. In addition, he concluded that a person who is really passionate about game design and puts effort into it can easily survive in the gaming industry. Though it looks like game designing is fun to do jobs, one really needs to be creative to find new ideas in game design, and if he/she fails to do so, he/she can lose his/her job.

At last, he concludes in the PodCast the game design team should be collaborative and respect each other. He has shown a deep concern for the people who are being torched to complete their work. All institutions apart from gaming need to be democratic to fix the problems as the game design team does in solving the problems.
