Yuri Alemao, the Leader of Opposition of the Goa Legislative Assembly, announced that if the Congress-led government comes to power at the center, they would prioritize the recovery of pending dues, which amount to crores in Goods and Service Tax (GST), from casinos and other sectors.
The recovered funds, which are estimated to be around Rs. 5000, would be used towards the welfare of common people.
This is a response to BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde’s statement on Inheritance Tax, Yuri Alemao accused the government of misleading the general public. Alemao also criticized the central government for Its lack of action in recovering GST dues from Casino operators in Goa.
The Congress party which was in power in Goa in 2012 has frequently criticized the close relationship between the BJP and casino operators.
As earlier reported by CNBC TV18 the popular Goa-based casino operator Delta Corp has Rs. 16,822 crore in GST dues related to its business operations in Goa. The matter is currently under challenge before the Supreme Court, with a hearing expected in May 2924.
Furthermore, Delta Corp donated Rs. 40 lakh worth of electoral bonds to political parties through its subsidiary Highstreet Cruises and Entertainment Pvt Ltd in April 2019.
In the past two years alone, Goa has collected over Rs. 820 crores in revenue from casinos, making these amounts significant and prompting the government to consider the possibility of imposing a ban on casinos.
