NCPCR Urges MeitY To Act Against 114 Illegal Offshore Betting Websites

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken an initiative against a total of 114 illegal offshore betting websites. The commission has directed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to undertake the task.

It was informed to the E.T. that the government had found all 114 illegal offshore betting sites doing domain farming. Not only that, SAG has found multiple domains linking back to the Mahadev Betting App syndicate and their connections.

Now, for the actions to be taken against these illegal betting and gambling sites, the commission has added section 3 of the CPCR Act, 2005, and Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) overseeing all the key legislations. Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) and the Right to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act have also been put against those sites.

As the commission is taking measures against illegal betting and gambling firms, they might include Tax Collection at Source (TCS) on UPI transactions. Officials told E.T. that the government might also track and block all the unregistered betting firms and tighten the verification process.

Complaint By “Society Against Gambling”

“Society Against Gambling” has posted a complaint underlining the proliferation of luring children into illegal betting. Taking their complaint seriously, the commission has directed this response in regard to minors taking part in these gambling activities.

These platforms lure minors through several communication channels, mostly through Telegram. Not only do they lack proper registration and licensing, but they also neglect all the KYC criteria requirements, which elevates the risk of underage gambling.

Now, NCPCR urges MeitY to take immediate action against these illegal platforms. In addition to that, they’ve also been tasked to take necessary measures to tighten the KYC requirements for all applications and gaming sites. The commission has also asked MeitY to provide them with a detailed report under a limited time of 10 days.
