Indian Actress Tamannaah Bhatia has been summoned by the Maharashtra cyber cell regarding her involvement in promoting the subsidiary app of the Mahadev online gaming and betting application, FairPlay This summon is related to allegations of illegal streaming of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on the FairPlay betting app.
As reported by Hindustan Times, Tamannaah Bhatia, best known for her roles in the Magnum Opus Bahubali film series, and many more South Indian films as well as Bollywood films, has been summoned as a witness and is expected to appear before the cyber cell this week.Â
The FairPlay app, described as a betting exchange platform, reportedly streamed some IPL matches illegally in 2023. This led to financial losses for Viacom18, the official right holder of the cricket tournament. Viacom18 filed a complaint with the Maharashtra Cyber cell citing digital copyright infringement.
The Maharashtra Cyber cell has reportedly taken statements from singer Badshah and the managers of actors Sanjay Dutt and Jacqueline Fernandez as part of an investigation into the Mahadev online gaming app and its subsidiary. This investment helped the cyber cell, as they get to know more about how the Mahadev App sent money to actors through shell companies.
Last year, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor, who appeared in the advertisements for the Mahadev App, were summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to the App. The ED’s investigation reportedly uncovered involvement from Chhattisgarh’s former chief minister and bureaucrats.
The Mahadev App, operated by individuals in Dubai, has faced allegations of using various tactics to attract customers, including creating new websites, closing groups on chat apps, and running paid advertisements on social media.
The involvement of celebrities in promoting such apps raises questions about their responsibility in promoting potentially illegal activities. Celebrities should be more cautious and transparent about the products and services they endorse.
